A few weeks ago I published Oslo Hotel Math, looking at how I chose where to stay in one of Europe’s more expensive cities. The answer wasn’t simply to book the cheapest hotel or the nicest one. It came from balancing Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits, breakfast, room size, location and price.

Over the following weeks I finished writing the rest of the trip, with each article exploring a different aspect of the same few days in Oslo.

Together they tell the story of the same few days from five different perspectives: choosing the hotel, staying there, exploring the neighbourhood, finding value, and getting home.

THE THIEF Oslo Review

An Oslo luxury hotel chosen for the math, but remembered for the experience.

THE THIEF began as a spreadsheet decision. By the end of the stay, what I remembered wasn’t the Fine Hotels & Resorts credit or the room upgrade. It was sitting beside the lobby fireplace with a bottle of wine after the bar had closed.

If Oslo Hotel Math explained why I chose it, this review explains what it was actually like to stay there.

The Decision

Oslo Hotel Math

How I compared THE THIEF and Scandic Solli using Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits, breakfast value, room size, family logistics and overall economics.

The Neighbourhood

While We Were There: Oslo’s Waterfront

A short photographic walk through Tjuvholmen, Aker Brygge and the Oslofjord. Canals, ferries, public art, waterfront apartments and a city where the water rarely feels separate from everyday life.

The Value Alternative

Scandic Solli Review

A practical family hotel that surprised me with its breakfast, location and overall value. Not every successful stay needs to be a luxury property.

Before You Fly Home

Oslo Airport Lounge Access

Two Priority Pass cards carrying the same branding. Two completely different outcomes.

A useful reminder that airport lounge access often depends on who issued the card, not simply the logo on the front.
