Our test booking was at Anantara New York Palace Budapest, an American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts property.
American Express recently announced that, beginning January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) bookings must be for at least two nights to qualify for the Platinum Card’s $600 annual lodging credit.
Currently, a one-night FHR reservation qualifies for the credit, which provides up to $300 in statement credits every six months.
The announcement raises an important question for cardholders with unused second-half 2026 credits: Can you still book a one-night FHR stay in 2027 using your 2026 credit, or does the new two-night requirement already apply?
We decided to test it.
First, can you use a 2026 credit for a stay in 2027?
Yes. This has long been possible under the Platinum lodging credit rules.
American Express allocates the credit according to when an eligible prepaid booking is charged to the card, rather than when the hotel stay takes place. For example, a qualifying FHR reservation made and prepaid in October 2026 for a stay in April 2027 can use the second-half 2026 lodging credit. We’ve used this approach previously, and nothing in the revised terms suggests that the ability to book future stays using the current period’s credit is changing.
However, the new two-night minimum introduces a separate question:
Does the new two-night minimum apply to stays in 2027 or bookings made in 2027?
American Express’s updated terms state:
Effective January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings will require a minimum two-night stay to be eligible for the $600 Lodging Credit.
The wording establishes an effective date but doesn’t explicitly explain how the change applies to reservations made before January 1 for stays occurring afterward.
There are two possible interpretations.
Either:
The rules in effect when the prepaid booking is made determine eligibility. A one-night reservation booked and paid for in 2026 would therefore remain eligible, even if the stay occurs in 2027, or
The new requirement applies to stays taking place from January 1, 2027, regardless of when they were booked.
This distinction could be important for anyone hoping to use an unused 2026 credit on a short hotel stay next year.
Our test: A one-night FHR booking for 2027
On October 24, 2026, after American Express announced the changes, we booked a one-night stay at the Anantara New York Palace Budapest for spring 2027.

The one-night FHR reservation for April 2–3, 2027, booked and prepaid in October 2026.
We made the reservation through American Express Travel using a U.S. Platinum Card with an unused second-half 2026 lodging credit. The reservation cost $318.33 in total, with $306.65 prepaid through American Express Travel and the remaining $11.68 payable at the property.
Event | Result |
|---|---|
Reservation made | October 24, 2026 |
Hotel stay | One night in April 2027 |
Booking channel | Amex Travel, FHR |
Prepaid charge | $306.65 |
Charge posted | Yes |
Benefit tracker acknowledged $300 credit | Yes |
$300 statement credit posted | October 26, 2026 |
Net room cost after credit | $18.33 ($6.65+$11.68) |
Initially the benefit tracker registered the benefit had been triggered:

Amex initially confirmed that the prepaid reservation had earned the $300 lodging credit.
A day or two later, the $300 credit appeared in the card’s transaction history:

The $306.65 prepaid FHR charge and corresponding $300 Platinum lodging credit, both dated October 24, 2026.
End result:
American Express issued the full $300 lodging credit against a one-night FHR reservation for 2027, booked after the two-night minimum had been announced.
What does this mean for remaining 2026 credits?
Our experience confirms that American Express applied the existing one-night eligibility rules to our October 2026 prepaid reservation, even though the hotel stay takes place after the new two-night minimum becomes effective.
That is consistent with the interpretation that the relevant date is when the prepaid transaction occurs, rather than when the hotel stay takes place. For cardholders with unused second-half 2026 lodging credits, the practical implication is straightforward:
A one-night FHR reservation for 2027 can still trigger the 2026 lodging credit if booked and prepaid before the end of 2026.
Clearly the booking must be eligible under the current terms, and as previously, a transaction must be processed by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on Dec 31 to be eligible for the H2 credit. Cardholders should also remember that cancelling an eligible prepaid reservation can result in the associated statement credit being reversed.
Our test confirms that the credit posted successfully. It doesn’t constitute a guarantee that American Express will never adjust its treatment of advance bookings or reverse credits in particular circumstances. Nevertheless, this is useful in that it is a completed, firsthand transaction rather than just our interpretation of the terms.
The bottom line
The new two-night FHR minimum will reduce the flexibility of the Platinum lodging credit beginning in 2027.
But our test demonstrates that the existing one-night rules are still being applied to eligible prepaid reservations made in 2026 for stays next year.
If you have an unused second-half 2026 Platinum lodging credit and are considering a one-night FHR stay in 2027, there may be a good reason to make that reservation before December 31.
