Palm trees frame the Miami skyline across Biscayne Bay.

Miami across Biscayne Bay.

Miami was a stop on the way to Nicaragua rather than the final destination. With one evening and part of the following morning, we chose the thing we most wanted to do and built the stopover around it.

That meant COTE first. The hotel, the neighborhood and even how we paid for the room followed.

Planning the Evening

With limited time, the first decision was where to spend the evening. We chose COTE over MILA in South Beach, then planned the rest of the stopover around that reservation.

Changing the Hotel Math

The hotel came next. We had booked the Moxy on points, but an Amex Offer changed the calculation and pushed the stay back to cash.

The First Night

Wynwood put us close enough to COTE without paying South Beach prices. The Moxy gave us the practical one-night stop we needed.

Dinner

The evening had been planned around COTE. Dinner was where we found out whether that original decision held up.

The Next Morning

We went out for coffee before heading to the airport. That turned into a longer walk through the neighborhood we’d chosen largely for other reasons.

The stopover had started with one restaurant reservation. By the time we left for the airport, it had produced a hotel decision, a payment decision, a dinner and an unplanned morning in Wynwood. For roughly 20 hours in Miami, that was enough.
