Close-up of two overlapping Chase IHG One Rewards cards, a personal Premier and a Premier Business.

Our IHG Premier and Business cards, whose new benefits include the airline statement credit.

The new $100 airline credit on my IHG One Rewards Business card (formerly Premier Business) has now worked in practice. A $753.59 flight purchase dated October 16 triggered the credit, with both transactions posting on October 18. Chase also shows 5X IHG points on the full purchase amount, without deducting the $100 credit.

An unplanned test

We were about to leave for the airport when ITA canceled our Friday flight from London City to Milan Linate, booked using United miles. We had already selected seats and collected boarding passes.

ITA’s proposed replacement departed on Monday. That was no use for a weekend getaway, especially as we had onward flights requiring us to be in Milan before the replacement would even depart.

After going back and forth with ITA and United, it was clear that a practical solution would not arrive in time. I’ll explore my UK261 options later, but needed to get something in place with some urgency. I recorded my refusal to accept the proposed replacement and the lack of a workable alternative, then booked our own flight from London Luton with Wizz Air.

That purchase became my first test of the airline credit introduced in October’s IHG card refresh.

How the IHG airline credit works

The benefit provides a $100 statement credit after a qualifying flight-ticket purchase of at least $250 in a single transaction directly with an airline. It is available once per calendar year through December 31, 2027. My $753.59 purchase exceeded the threshold. A purchase closer to $250 would make better use of the fixed credit, leaving larger purchases for a card whose points I value more highly, such as Amex Platinum. Here, the priority was securing the replacement flight.

As with similar card benefits, the credit posted automatically without a separate claim. Chase labeled it “AIRLINE CREDIT,” and both the purchase and credit show October 18 as their posting date.

Chase applied the $100 airline credit automatically against the $753.59 flight purchase.

Does the credit reduce points earnings?

In this transaction, it did not. Chase shows ~3768 IHG points, representing 5X on the full $753.59 purchase, rather than the $653.59 remaining after the credit.

Chase rewards breakdown showing a $100 airline credit and 3767.95 IHG points earned at 5X on the full purchase amount.

Chase calculated 5X points on the full $753.59 purchase, before the $100 credit.

This also confirms that the credit is available to existing cardholders before their next renewal, as announced.

This was an expense incurred to rescue an existing trip. The credit recovered $100 of that cost automatically, and the purchase retained its full points earnings. That is the first actual airfare-credit result from the changes discussed in our five-card IHG portfolio analysis.
