If you’ve spent any time in Fiji, you’ve probably heard of “Fiji time.” It’s the locals’ affectionate way of describing the islands’ famously relaxed attitude towards punctuality. Having flown into Nadi a couple of times before, I wasn’t expecting anything remarkable.
As with my recent timing of Singapore Changi, I decided to measure this one too.
The question wasn’t whether Nadi could compete with one of the world’s most efficient airports. It was something much more practical: how long should I realistically expect the arrival process to take?
With my Fiji Airways flight from Singapore landing at 3:59 am, I was curious about whether I would be checking into my resort on Denarau Island before 5:00 am. Not because I was in a hurry, but my family members were already there the day before, and I was concerned about whether I might wake them at an awkward hour.
I’d arrived at Nadi before, in both 2022 and 2023 on flights from Los Angeles, and my memory was that the process wasn’t especially quick. Perhaps those arrivals coincided with busier periods. Perhaps I’d simply remembered them differently. Either way, I wasn’t expecting this visit to be much different.
The Rules
As before, I wasn’t trying to beat the clock, but I also wasn’t trying to kill time. I simply made my way through the airport as I normally would. I walked at my normal pace, slowing several times to take photographs along the way. But it certainly wasn’t a best-case arrival.
I had checked baggage, spent several minutes at immigration despite there being almost nobody ahead of me, and then lost another few minutes in the arrivals hall looking for a driver. My father had previously arranged airport transfers for family members, but I’d forgotten to confirm whether one had been booked for me before leaving Singapore. After a brief search for someone holding my name on a board, I accepted that nobody was coming and headed for the taxi rank instead.
The idea wasn’t to produce the fastest possible time. It was simply to record what happened.
3:59 am: Touchdown
Fiji Airways touched down in Nadi at 3:59 am. After a short taxi to the stand, the aircraft doors opened at 4:08 am and I happened to be among the first passengers off the aircraft. That was when I started the timer.

The Walk
The airport felt more modern than I remembered from my previous visits. Only later did I realize how much the arrivals facilities had changed. While those works had been completed long before this trip, this was the first time I’d really noticed the difference.

Everything sped up after immigration.

One Last Delay
The arrivals board at 4:24 am showed several more international flights due behind us.
Outside customs, I slowed myself down again. I’d forgotten to confirm airport transfer arrangements before leaving Singapore. On previous trips someone had been waiting with a name board, so I spent a few minutes scanning the arrivals hall before accepting nobody was coming.

Only then did I walk outside. There was no queue. I climbed straight into the first taxi on the rank.
The Result
From stepping off the aircraft to reaching the taxi stand took about 17 minutes.
That included:
checked baggage,
a short delay at immigration,
slowing repeatedly to take photographs,
and spending several minutes unsuccessfully looking for a pre-arranged driver.
Even so, I was outside far sooner than I’d expected.
With no driver waiting, I headed straight to the taxi rank instead.
The Next Clock Starts
Getting through Nadi Airport was only part of the journey. I was curious as to whether I would be at my hotel before 5:00 am. I climbed into a taxi and headed for Denarau Island.
At 4:49 am, just 50 minutes after touchdown, I was walking into the Wyndham.

Final Thoughts
Before this trip, I’d assumed Nadi would simply be… Fiji. Not inefficient, but unhurried. After all, “Fiji time” has become part of the country’s identity, affectionately describing a culture where life isn’t always governed by the clock. Visitors joke about it, and locals often do too.
The airport, however, told a different story. Despite waiting at immigration, collecting checked baggage and wasting a few minutes looking for a driver who wasn’t there, I was outside the terminal only seventeen minutes after stepping off the aircraft.
Fifty minutes after landing, I was checking into my resort. For anyone planning a trip to Fiji, that’s a useful benchmark to have.
Perhaps “Fiji time” doesn’t start until you’ve left the airport.
